Though she had only been in this world for 18 years, Eponine Thénardier had seen more life in that time than some people three times her age. A childhood of privilege and an adolescence of poverty. Unrequited love. Revolution. And after all that life, she needed to get out of Paris. During the revolution, she had placed herself in the path of a gunshot to save the life of the man she loved, and almost lost her own in the process. The gunshot wound had almost killed her, but she was one of the lucky ones. She had managed to drag herself out of harm’s way for the rest of the fighting, and was taken to a hospital when it was all over. And during her recovery, Eponine made her decision: she was leaving Paris, possibly even all of France, as soon as she could. The minute she was released from the hospital, Eponine set out to find a way to leave. Exiting the city proper was easily accomplished, but it did little to ease her troubled soul, so she just kept walking, hitching rides and begging food wherever she could. Eventually her trek brought her, shivering and hungry, through Normandy to the coast. She was so thin and small that there was little difficulty in posing as a boy, gaining passage on a ship to England in exchange for doing cabin-boy work.
Once in England, the obvious choice was to head towards London. Perhaps there, Eponine could find some work, and maybe even some peace of mind. The streets of London were little different from the streets of Paris…cold and dirty, perhaps a bit wetter than in Paris. Luckily, she knew enough English that, after a brief encounter with a young man by the name of Jack Dawkins, who taught her to pick pockets, she managed to secure a position as a barmaid in a London pub. It wasn’t classy, but it was work. And that was just what she needed, if she was to bury her past and begin anew.
Yeah, really not that great, but more intended to give Nick something to work off from when he's writing his teaser things than as real backstory.
