New TV Show: Open Skies
So for a challenge at
tvrealm, we were given the opportunity to repeat a past challenge. Being the crazy person I am, I chose to make another tv show.
Name: Open Skies
Type: hour-long sci-fi/drama airing on SyFy; summer hiatus show with 13 episodes per season
Synopsis: Captained by gambler and socialite Susannah Cassay, the fancy passenger airship Endymion, which makes trans-Atlantic voyages between the ports of Boston, London, and New York, caters to the rich and powerful, who prefer to travel in comfort and style. Some, like the wealthy Charlie Fulton, prefer this method of travel so much they choose to live on board, renting a permanent room, befriending (and sometimes dating) members of the crew as well as fellow passengers. Others, like the mysterious “Johanna Engall” (whose real name nobody knows) come and go, bringing odd occurrences in their wake. OPEN SKIES chronicles the daily lives of the crew of this ship, their friendships and feuds, as well as their adventures when dealing with unexpected happenings and trying to figure out who or what their Mysterious Stranger may be.
Theme song: Come Sail Away – Styx
Closing credits: changes each week, but always a song by Abney Park; songs usually selected for relevance to the episode’s plot.

Susannah Cassay, the Captain (played by Jaime Murray)
Susannah Wiley was always something of a black sheep in her family. Her family wasn’t super rich, but they had just enough money to make them snobbish, and therefore they were scandalized when Susannah refused to demurely settle down and raise babies like they had expected. Susannah has a wild streak, preferring to spend her time at parties and poker games, instead of at socials and sewing circles. In her forays, she crossed paths with Jonas Cassay, a mid-level chef at a well-known restaurant. They quickly fell madly in love, much to the distaste of Susannah’s family. They didn’t approve of Jonas, but eventually they gave their blessing for her to marry him anyway, in the hopes that maybe he’d be able to calm her down a little. They were sorely mistaken, however: instead of being a “good influence,” Jonas encouraged Susannah to follow her own path. She used most of her dowry to purchase a restaurant of their own, where Jonas was the head chef; the restaurant was successful enough that she was free to do whatever she wanted (and Jonas wasn’t so interested in what people thought that he’d care what kind of reputation she might develop). And that was just the way she liked it: Susannah spent her days at the racetrack, and her nights at the poker table. She won more than she lost, for the most part, but her luckiest break came five years ago, when she won the Endymion from Nathaniel Cobdon. And instead of turning around and selling it (like a “sensible” person would), the Cassays fitted it out as a trans-Atlantic cruiser, with Susannah acting as captain.

Jonas Cassay, the Chef (played by Mark Sheppard)
Jonas Cassay used to run a pretty successful restaurant in London after his marriage to Susannah. Then his wife went and won an airship in a poker game - now he runs a floating restaurant. He and Susannah pride themselves on the fact that their ship is a fairly posh establishment, essentially catering to the same sort of clientele as his London restaurant did, so Jonas keeps up his skills as head chef on the Endymion. Jonas gets on well with everyone on the crew, often better than Susannah does. In part, this is because he’s not “the boss,” in part because of his wicked sense of humor. Though he tries to hide it, he’s got a soft spot for Meg Doherty; she brings out in him a fatherly instinct he didn’t know he had, so he frequently makes excuses to request her help in the kitchen. He hasn’t told her yet, but he’s considering taking her on as his apprentice, because she’s actually a pretty good cook for a street kid.

Nathaniel Cobden, the First Mate (played by Sean Bean)
A career sailor, Nathaniel Cobden has been working on airships all his life. He worked his way up through the ranks, putting aside as much as possible until he had enough money saved to buy his own airship. Things were great for Nathaniel for a while after that: he owned his own ship, and was, finally, the captain. Things were great, except for the fact that now that he was turning a profit from his airship business, he was free to indulge his biggest weakness: poker. His losses weren’t too huge at first, but gradually things got worse and worse, until the fateful night when he came up against Susannah Cassay. In that one evening, not only did he manage to lose the ship to her, but he lost way more money than he could afford as well. Susannah gave him the option of working for her on the ship until his debt was paid off, to which he agreed, grudgingly. Currently, he’s acting as first mate on the Endymion, with another year left on his indenture. Even after this long, he’s still nursing a grudge against Susannah for winning his ship out from under him, and it shows in his work.

Lila Doherty, the Mechanic (played by Allison Scagliotti)
A good mechanic is a tough enough thing to come by as it is. Lila is more than good, though: she has a Talent for it. In this world, a mechanical Talent (just a touch of magic, no more: but it’s enough to keep a ship flying longer and better than can be done by your ordinary mechanic) is a very valuable thing. When Lila was 16 and just discovering her Talent, she was kidnapped by a crew of airship pirates, who forced her to be their mechanic for almost three years before she managed to escape. It was only by the sheerest of luck that, after her escape, she managed to reunite with her sister Meg. After a year of living on the streets, working odd jobs and terrified of revealing her Talent for mechanics to anybody, Lila was offered a job by Susannah. She took it, but on two conditions: that she be guaranteed protection against being kidnapped again, and that her sister be allowed to come aboard with her. Susannah agreed, and Lila and Meg have been living and working there for a couple years. Lila sometimes feels she spends more time keeping Meg out of trouble than she does working on the engines, but for the first time in her life, she feels safe, and that’s enough.

Meg Doherty, Lila's Sister (played by Molly Quinn)
Meg is Lila’s little sister. Despite being younger, she’s the more street-smart of the two; this probably has a lot to do with the fact that she spent three years on her own in the streets of New York, trying to survive and stay out of sight, but at the same time trying not to stray too far from where she and Lila used to live, in case Lila ever managed to come back for her. Her tricks and street smarts worked: she wasn’t too much the worse for wear when Lila finally managed to escape, and Meg’s knowledge helped the two of them survive the following year until Susannah took them in. Though in some ways Meg is wise beyond her years, she’s still a teenager…and also a troublemaker. She knows Lila means well, but finds her protectiveness overbearing at times, and is pretty inventive when it comes to finding ways to get out from under her sister’s watchful eye. She’s not at loose ends all the time, though: she does have to earn her keep on the ship, same as the rest of the crew. This usually manifests as getting roped into helping out with the laundry or other tasks; she complains no matter what the job is, but secretly, she enjoys it when her duties land her in the kitchen with Jonas: he’s the closest thing to a father she’s ever had. Her kitchen duties are also the reason for her secret friendship with Becky – if she hadn’t been in the kitchen that night, Meg probably wouldn’t even know Becky was on board.

Charlie Fulton, Esq., the Rich Passenger (played by Seamus Dever)
Irish-born and Boston-bred, Charlie Fulton, Esq. is a regular fixture on the Endymion. He’s the epitome of the idle rich (calling his family “wealthy” would be like saying the sun is “kind of big”) – instead of being one of the rich people that live in hotels, he decided to take it one step further, taking a permanent room on the Endymion (because really, the only thing more frivolous than living in a hotel is living in a flying hotel). Because he’s such a fixture on the ship, he’s even managed to develop friendships with various members of the crew, choosing to ignore the difference in social classes. Between his relationships with the crew and the other guests, Charlie is a bit of a playboy…and isn’t particularly picky as to the gender of his current partner. Lately, though, he thinks he’s starting to fall for someone, harder than he’s ever fallen before, and he’s not really sure what to do about that.

Geoffrey Halliday, the Steward/Barman (played by Eddie Cahill)
Geoffrey Halliday runs the ship’s bar. He’s your typical jovial barkeep, with a healthy dose of snark thrown in for good measure. He makes a show of flirting with pretty much anybody who comes into his bar, but it’s a very rare occasion when anything ever comes of it. For all that he likes to show off a bit, he’s actually a romantic at heart. In addition, he’s also the crew’s go-to guy if anybody needs information on any of the guests. People tend to spill their guts - figuratively…for the most part - when they’re in Geoff’s bar (the big blue eyes and cheeky grin invite confidence, apparently), and Geoff has no qualms about passing on the information when it’s needed. Every good barkeep needs a confidante of his own, of course, and Geoff found one in Sally. She spends a fair amount of time at his bar, and she knows how to keep a secret. She’s the only one on board he’s told about the crush he’s nursing…though pretty much everyone else thinks they’ve figured it out too.

Sally Tennyson, the Head of Security (played by Gina Torres)
Sally Tennyson worked in private security for years before being hired on with the Endymion. She’s worked for all kinds of people, from wealthy socialites to the criminal underworld. Susannah encountered Sally on several occasions, when Sally was working security for some of Susannah’s poker opponents. After winning the Endymion, Susannah made sure to get in contact with Sally, making her a very generous offer to abandon her current employment and work for Susannah as head of her security detail. Sally gladly accepted the job, enjoying not only the fat paycheck, but also the idea of a steady job that’s guaranteed to last more than a couple months. With the exception of the other members of the security detail, Sally mostly keeps to herself, preferring to spend her time alone (frequently at the ship’s bar) in her off-duty hours. Besides Geoff, who runs the bar, the only crew member she has much contact with is Meg Doherty, who likes to play tricks on her. Sally has thrown her in the brig more than once, but for a variety of reasons, it never seems to stick.

Genevieve "Jenny" French, the Surgeon (played by Kirsten Vangsness)
Genevieve “Jenny” French knew she wanted to be a doctor from the time she was five years old. When the time came for her to actually learn to be a doctor, her family didn’t have anywhere near enough money to pay for her school, and her own job opportunities were limited, so she paid her way through school the only possible way she could find: she worked as a call girl during her entire time at medical school. It paid the bills, and she even enjoyed it some of the time, but clearly it wasn’t what she wanted to spend the rest of her life doing. Even once she found a job as a doctor, she had a hard time making ends meet…but at least she finally got to do what she was passionate about. Eventually, she was approached by Susannah, who needed a resident doctor aboard her airship. Jenny jumped at the chance – being a doctor is her passion, and she loves meeting new people on top of it. Jenny tries to be friends with everyone on the crew, with varying degrees of success. She and Abby are pretty much joined at the hip, and she’s on fairly good terms with everyone else (with the exception of Nathaniel, who makes it a point not to befriend anybody).

Abby Howell, the Pilot (played by Eve Myles)
Most pilots are competitive, always trying to be the best, the fastest, the most agile at maneuvering. When you’re a pilot of a posh passenger vessel, however, fast and maneuverable take a backseat to steady and gentle. And when it comes to steady, Abby Howell is one of the best. She exudes an almost meditative-like calm. Slow to anger, but also slow to laugh, Abby is kind of a mystery to most people when they first meet her. She finds it a little hard to make friends, but with one exception. When she and Jenny first met, they bonded immediately. Jenny spends most of her off-duty hours in the cockpit with Abby, and Abby in turn spends much of her free time in or around the surgery, depending on whether Jenny is performing a procedure at the time. Jenny brings out the hidden troublemaker in Abby, and Abby is the steadying hand who keeps Jenny out of trouble if she’s had too much to drink; when they’re together, they both like to teasingly flirt with Charlie (because in their opinion, they’re way out of his league).

Becky Coughlan, the Stowaway (played by Britt McKillip)
Becky Coughlan spent much of her life living on the streets of Boston. She’d been left at an orphanage when she was five or six years old, and ran away at age ten, preferring life on the streets over the life she had at the orphanage. By the time she was 17, she’d become super-savvy at ways of surviving street life in Boston, in addition to having begun her own personal investigation of who her parents might have been. Her investigation was starting to point her towards locations outside of Boston, but she had no way of getting anyplace else, until the day she discovered the Endymion docked and momentarily poorly guarded. She stowed away on the ship, and managed to keep herself pretty well hidden for the first few weeks. Then one evening she sneaked into the kitchen to steal some food, thinking she was alone as usual, only to discover Meg Doherty working late. Once the shock wore off for both girls, the struck up a close but secret friendship, bonding over the shared experience of living on the streets.

"Johanna Engall," the Mysterious Stranger™ (played by Rebecca Gayheart)
The Mysterious Stranger comes and goes on the Endymion; nobody knows what she does or where she’s originally from. When she comes on as a passenger, she uses the name Johanna Engall, but society folk don’t know anybody who’s ever gone by that name. Wherever she goes, odd happenings seem to follow in her wake. Though Susannah and Jonas try to maintain a policy of distance between crew and passengers, the whole crew can’t help but take an interest in who Johanna might be. Rumors abound that she might be a spy, though of course nobody is able to confirm it. The crew make a bit of a game of it, trying to see who can find out any information about her when she’s on board; so far, nobody’s really winning.
I desperately want to know who everyone ships! Because this time I made a conscious effort NOT to pair everyone off (with the obvious exception of Susannah and Jonas, and they're because I've never actually written a married couple before), but I do have some ships in mind. YOUR OPINION ON SHIPS, I WOULD LIKE IT.
Meta post here, if anybody's interested.

As for ships - it's a classic love triangle. Geoffrey has a crush on Jenny - she's so pretty and dedicated to her work. But Jenny admires Charlie's sophistication and charm. And Charlie is totally interested in Geoffrey (he loves the blue eyes). (The fandom would be full of OT3 fics.)
And Nathaniel would rather cut off his arm than admit he likes Sally. *g* Also, Nathaniel and Johanna have a casual thing - they get together occasionally - but not always - when she's on board.

Ooh, I hadn't even given the faintest thought to Nathaniel and Johanna. Nathaniel was, in all honesty, added as an afterthought, and I kind of...don't like him? XD (I had a hell of a time casting him, because I knew I needed a character that was kind of the bad guy, ish, but didn't want to cast an actor I really like for the part. So it took some hunting around the internet to find an actor I thought could play a bad guy, lol)

Anyway! Lots of awesome female characters, and Gina Torres and Kirsten Vangsness = I'M SOLD. :D
My shipping method always seems to be "screw canon, I'll ship what I want", LOL, so I can actually see myself shipping Gina and Kirsten's characters. xD

Gina Torres and KV are awesome!
Haha yeah, that tends to be my shipping method too. And more femslash in the world is always a good thing. :)
